There is now clear evidence that restricted food availability is capable of entraining a circadian clock; that is, limited food access can serve as a zeitgeber and it has many of the same effects on clocks as other entraining stimuli (for a review see Rusak 1990).

Thus, when they are exposed to LD cycles in standard laboratory cages they cannot escape from the light portion of the photoperiod. Obviously nocturnally-active animals in the field seek the shelter of their burrows during the day, and only sample the light periodically. Several researchers have designed semi-natural environments in the laboratory that give the animals the option of staying in their burrows and control their own exposure to the LD cycle as well as when they exhibit wheel-running behaviour.

During the first 10 days of this record the rodent is housed 20 in constant darkness. Under this condition, the circadian clock expresses its own intrinsic 'free-running' cycle. In this example the 'free-running' circadian cycle is slightly longer than 24 h. On day 10 a light/dark cycle consisting of 12 h light and 12 h darkness (LD 12 : 12) is imposed. The circadian clock is synchronised or 'entrained' to 24 h by the LD cycle. Locomotor activity occurs during the 12-h dark phase (indicated by box) in this nocturnally-active rodent.
